One of us came clean last night!
A story of redemption...
Twenty-one years ago, Brenda (McGilvery)
Johnson, '85, went into the library at MDHS to study, or perhaps to take
shelter from the cold. While she was
there, she left her letterman jacket unattended, and someone (another junior) took that
opportunity to steal her Block D - the symbol of her hours of hard work, sweat,
and dedication in participating with a team of athletes for our school.
This person wasn't thinking about Brenda, or how she might
dearly miss her badge of honor, not to mention her source of warmth and
protection from the elements on a cold day; they were thinking about getting their
hands on that Block D. Who knows why -
and at this point, the reason doesn't really matter. That was a very long time ago, and now, the
Block D is back with its rightful owner.
Someone came clean last night - they anonymously gave the Block D back
to Brenda with a thoughtful letter. This
is what it said:
Dear Brenda,
I hope this doesn't start your
evening off on a sour or poor note, but I believe this is your property.
I'm sorry for stealing it from
you. I stole it in the library our
junior year. I don't know where the
jacket is, but I must (have) had it at some point, because I wanted the
letter. I hope I didn't trash it, that would have been even a shittyer
thing to do. I think I might have turned
it in to the office lost and found. I've
been ashamed of doing that for a long time, and I'm sorry I did that. I hope that you, and Ken (Johnson) will have
a nice time at the reunion.
Brenda responded:
I would like to convey to whoever
took it, thank you for returning the "D" - Block. Ken and I enjoyed ourselves very
much..........
